Spellbinders Starry Forest

Hi crafty friends!  Today I have more Christmas card inspiration for you, this time I’m featuring the Spellbinders Starry Forest Etched Die Set from the recent Sheryn Sowell Holiday 2019 Release.  Working with dies as the main focal point on your card is a great way to create a super quick card so this one also qualifies for my “10 Minutes to WOW” card series and great for mass producing.

The dies in this set are skillfully etched resulting in beautifully detailed images.  This particular set has enough images to create an entire card without having to add any stamped images.  I simply heat foiled a sentiment in the top left corner from the Holiday Sentiments Glimmer Set.

I also decided to use some non traditional colors for this card and a highlight color of the COPPER for the deer.  I find that a variety in textures and finishes helps differentiate between the different images and adds interest to the card.  I have a FREE PDF download below for you, but here are some general points on creating the card.

Spellbinders Starry Forest

  • I started with a Simon Says Stamp Mint card base – A2 size. (PS – Ink blending on colored card stock saves a ton of time).
  • I used a Life Saving Blending brush to add Cracked Pistachio and Pine Needles Distress Oxide ink behind where the tree was going.
  • Next I watered down a bit of white Gouache and used a brush to splatter it across the card front.

For my Die cutting:

  • Tree is Simon Says Stamp Peacock
  • Deer – Tim Holtz Metallic Kraft (the copper)
  • The bunnies – scraps of thick white.

I ran the tree through a second time with a scrap of the copper to get the little star in the birds beak. I also mounted them all with foam tape for some added dimension to the card without extra work.

I used the “Merry Christmas” words hot foil plates to add my sentiment.  It debosses as it foils which is a very cool effect on a card.

The final step was adding a few copper sequins just to balance off the copper in the image.  There you go, one set of die cuts, a little ink blending = the perfect recipe for mass producing this card.
