If you hate cleaning as much as I do, this “I Hate Cleaning — But I Love this Card” design from the Spellbinders Shiny New Day release might make chores look a little more fun. Today I’m creating with this adorable new release from Spellbinders, Shiny New Day, featuring the sweetest little cleaning accessories and a bright retro-inspired color palette.
The inspiration for my color combo actually came from my very first “grown-up” rental house when I was a young adult. It had the cutest retro bathroom with pink tile walls and a classic black-and-white checkered floor. I still remember how fun and cheerful it felt, so I decided to recreate that same retro vibe for today’s card.
All the cardstock colors are from Spellbinders; (linked at the end of the post). The black-and-white floor, I dug into my patterned paper stash and found the perfect checked design to bring the whole look together.
So, let’s jump in, and I’ll show you exactly how I made it.

How to Create the I Hate Cleaning Card Design
Create the Card Base:
Trim a panel of Tutu cardstock to 3-1/2″ x 4″ and embossing it with the Suds and Buds Embossing Folder, using the bubbly “Suds” portion of the design.
Next, trim a panel of black and white patterned paper to 2″ x 4″, along with a strip of white cardstock to 3/8″ x 4″.
Attach all three to the front of a white top-folding A2-sized card base. Add the black and white panel at the bottom, then attach the pink embossed panel at the top. Finish by adding the thin white strip over the seam of the two panels. This creates the “baseboard” look from my retro bathroom inspiration.
Die Cut the Cleaning Accessories:
Die cut all the cleaning tools, bucket, gloves, sponge, scrub brush, bottle, mop, and floral accents from Spellbinders cardstock colors. This is the perfect card project for cleaning out that scrap bin.
Assemble the pieces using liquid glue and small foam squares for added dimension. I love how the bright aqua, yellow, lime and purple colors pop against the pink embossed background.
Stamp and heat emboss the sentiment onto the bucket before assembling the arrangement.
Assemble the I Hate Cleaning Card:
Arrange the bucket and cleaning accessories in the center of the card front, tucking the mop, sponge, bottle, and leaves, into the bucket to create a fun scene.
Add the gloves and scrub brush near the bottom edge for extra movement and balance.
I auditioned a few different color combinations for the elements, which you can see from the extra photo props down the side of the image.
In our house, I cook, and Ian cleans. Don’t get me wrong — I love a clean uncluttered house, but cleaning every single week? I’d much rather be making cards, haha…. I do help with the big spring cleanings, and deep cleans, but for the most part, I bribe Ian with homemade sourdough bread in exchange for cleaning duties, haha…..
