NEW Card Making Video – Botanical Wreath Blackout Technique

If you are like me, you LOVE to create cards with Embossing Folders.  Right?  Today I have Botanical Wreath Blackout Technique to share with you.  The Nature’s Botanical Release from Spellbinders and Susan Tierney-Cockburn is beautiful, and I chose the Botanical Wreath and Nature’s Botanical Garden BetterPress Sentiments to create with today.  This is a super fast and easy inking technique, and you are going to LOVE the results.  I did a quick video of the technique for you too.

Botanical Wreath Blackout Technique

This embossed image is huge, so I’m working with a 5″ x 7″ card today.  For the blackout technique, you need to choose your ink colors carefully.  You want your darkest color to be your blackout ink, you will see in the video why.  So, pick a few colors you like and let’s jump into this.

How to create Botanical Wreath Blackout Technique Card:

Start with a piece of white cardstock 4-1/2″ x 6-1/2″.  Spritz both sides with water, this helps to break down the paper fibers and cuts down on tearing when you emboss.  Place Inside the embossing folder and run it through the Platinum 6 die cutting machine.

Next, when the paper is dry, add color to the flowers and leaves with the ink and blending brushes on the INDENTED SIDE of the embossed image.

Doing the Blackout Technique:

Technically, this is the Reverse Blackout Technique, LOL I have a video for the Blackout Technique Here

And another video for the Reverse Blackout Technique here:

Start with the art piece lying flat on a protected surface.  Ensure the ink pad you are using to “blackout” is well-inked.

Pull the ink pad across the entire surface of your art piece.  Don’t press so hard that the ink goes down into the embossed flowers and completely covers them.  Just hard enough that it colors the background; and highlights the embossed image.  This takes a few swipes to get solid coverage.  Watch the video for this step.

Adding the Sentiment:

Once you are happy with the blackout coverage, create your card base.

Cut a white cardstock 7″ x 10″, score and fold at 5″.  Then, cut a pink card front 5″ x 7″ and attach.

Next, attach the art piece to the card front.

Then, use the Nature’s Botanical Garden Sentiments and your BetterPress System to create the sentiment.

I used the same pink cardstock and the Navy Ink I used for the blackout (for less mess, use the Cosmic Sky BetterPress Ink you will get a lot less ink on the background magnet plate).  Die cut the sentiments with the coordinating dies and attach to the center of the wreath.

Finally, place it inside a splat box, and splatter it with white and gold paint.

Grab your embossing folders and give this fun technique a try.

  1. Beautiful cards, Sandi and great video on how you created these art pieces. Such a fun technique and a different way to stretch embossing folders. Love it!
