Die Cut Quilt Card | Altenew Patchwork Pathways

Hey cardmaking friends — welcome back! Today we’re doing a little quilting… with cardstock! 😊 I’m sharing how to create a die cut quilt card using the new Altenew Patchwork Pathways Die Set.

In this tutorial, I’m sharing how to create a die-cut quilt card using the new Altenew Patchwork Pathways Die Set. As a quilter, I was especially excited to receive this set as part of the Altenew Ambassador Program — it’s such a fun way to bring traditional quilting designs into cardmaking.

In today’s post, I’ll walk you step-by-step through the process. It’s very similar to quilting with fabric — just swap out the sewing machine for your die-cutting machine!

Of course, I created my quilt design using my favorite teal and green cardstock combination, so let’s dive in and get started.

Oh, and be sure to hop over to my Instagram for this post — Altenew has generously provided a gift certificate that I’ll be giving away to one lucky commenter!

Creating the Card Base and Background

Start by creating a top-folding A2 white card base (4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″). Cut a panel of white cardstock to the same size and die cut it using the lattice die from the Altenew Patchwork Pathways Die Set. Adhere this panel to the front of your card base.

Die Cutting the Quilt Pieces

Next, use the four dies that create the quilted design. Trim strips of colored cardstock just wide enough to fit the dies and approximately 4-1/2″ long. This allows you to efficiently die cut multiple quilt pieces at once.

PRO TIP: By cutting your cardstock into strips, you can die cut all four quilt pieces in a single pass. Repeat this process about 10 times to create enough pieces to fully cover your card front.

Assembling the Quilt Blocks

Once all your die cut pieces are ready, assemble the quilt blocks using Bearly Art Glue with a fine tip applicator. Apply a small amount of glue, align the pieces carefully, and place something heavy on top while they dry to keep everything flat and secure.

Assembling Your Die Cut Quilt Card

Begin in the center of the card front and adhere your assembled quilt blocks, aligning them within the stitched lattice design. This helps keep your pattern straight and evenly spaced.

As you reach the outer edges, adhere the remaining quilt panels so they slightly overhang one side of the card. Once the glue is completely dry, trim the excess flush with the edge of the card base. Use the trimmed pieces to fill in any remaining gaps on the opposite side, ensuring a seamless quilted design across the entire panel.

Adding the Sentiment

To finish the card, die cut a sentiment using the Altenew Versatile Greetings Die Set from both black and white cardstock. Layer the pieces together for added dimension, then adhere the sentiment to the bottom right corner of the card using foam squares.
