Hand Made Watercolor 5 x 5 Square cards

Hey card making friends, sorry to be quiet for an extra few days.  It’s summer and that brings friends and family visiting.  My mom-in-law is currently visiting so we have been out and about staycationing with her.  I did grab yesterday to create these Hand Made Watercolor 5 x 5 square cards to share with you using the new Beautiful Backgrounds Collection from Stampendous and Spellbinders.  These are huge 6 x 6 rubber stamps (yeah rubber, love how they stamp).  Then I got out a watercolor set and had some fun, check it out below.

hand made square card with a bouquet of flowers in purples and blues with green leaves created with new card making products from Spellbinders

I only used 5 colors in my 36 pan set for today’s cards, keeping it all in one set for each card.  How they look different is the amount of water I added to each one for the depth of color.  I’m using the Altenew 36 Pan Set, colors:  Shades of Purple, Deep Blue Seas, Sea Shore, Green Hills and Starry Night.

PRODUCTS USED:

Let’s start with the darkest and work our way to the lightest.

hand made square card with blue, purple, and green leaves with a dark blue background and a happy birthday sentiment in the center on top of a circle of vellum.

Hand Made Watercolor 5 x 5 Square cards – Card #1

Start with a 6 x 8 watercolor panel and a Misti, removing the paper and stamping pad from the Misti and replacing it with the Leafy Lines Beautiful Backgrounds stamp, stamp side up.

Next, attach a couple of pieces of 2 sided tape to the back of the watercolor paper.  Gently lay the good paper side on top of the stamp and close the Misti lid to adhere the paper to the lid.  Ink up the stamp with VersaMark ink and stamp the image a couple of times before covering with black embossing powder, shake off the excess and heat set.

Then, watercolor the image with the paints.  I mixed this one very thick as I wanted the dark rich colors.  Wetting the leaves and using the embossed ridges to hold the ink in place, adding all 3 colors at once and letting it run together.

Finally, when it was dry, I water colored the background with the Starry Night dark blue.

Paper Cutting Instructions:

  • Card Base:  White Hammermill 5″ x 10″, score and fold at 5″.
  • Card Front:  Bassill Card Stock  5″ x 5″ square.
  • Mat:  White Hammermill 4-5/8″ x 4-5/8″
  • Watercolor art piece cut down to 4-1/2″ x 5-1/2

The cutting instructions are the same for all 3 cards.  Layer the pieces flat and then add the sentiments.  The Happy Birthday is from the Simply Perfect mix and Match Sentiments, cut in blue and then twice in white to layer and attach to a circle of cut vellum.  Embellish with Sapphire AB Color Essentials Gems from Spellbinders.

Hand Made Watercolor 5 x 5 Square cards – Card #2

Start by stamping the Floral Garden Beautiful Background stamp in the same manner as above, this time using white embossing powder.

Next, use a bit more water when mixing your paint for lighter shades.  You can also use the Floating Ink Technique on this image, where you wet the image very well, and drop the color in and let it run.  I have a video here for you.

Then, cut and layer the pieces as in card #1

Finally, die cut the sentiment using the Simply Perfect Mix and Match Sentiment Die set and embellish with Peridot Color Essentials Gems.

hand made 5 x 5 square watercolor card with a light blue, green and purple streaked background and silhouetted Agapanthus flowers in black

Hand Made Watercolor 5 x 5 Square cards – Card #3

Start by stamping the Agapanthus Beautiful Background Stamp image the same as card #1, using black embossing powder.

Next, use a wide flat brush and wet the entire surface, then add very watered down paint, to create the misty colored background.  Watercolor dries lighter, so ensure you have enough color for your desired results when dry.

Then, cut the pieces down and layer them as in the card #1 instructions.

Finally, add a sentiment from the Serenade Sentiments Die Set cut in teal with a black shadow and embellish with Onyx Color Essential Gems.
