Yeah, My Monthly Hero Adventure Awaits kit arrived the other day and I busted it open to play. This month’s kit includes a layered stencil set of the desert and it’s FABULOUS. If you saw my last post and video you know how much I love layered stencils and this one did not disappoint.
Adventure lies ahead with our August My Monthly Hero kit. The desert southwest is your destination as you create beautiful landscapes with the kit’s layering stencils. Hero Arts included four ink colors to get you started, but a rainbow of possibilities await. Add some glistening shimmer with Pearl-Ex powder. There are dies to cut out the desert elements, and a message set with greetings that are great for cardmaking and journaling alike. Be wild and free as you enjoy the creative journey!
The hardest part about this months kit is trying to decide what colors to use. The other design team members have already covered many of the color combos I thought of, so I decided to go for high noon. That white hot heat with all the yellows blending into oranges. Using the layers in the stencil allows you to add beautiful depth and detail with additional colors really bringing the image to life.

I used Hero Arts Ink Bending Brushes to create my scene and a selection of inks from mid yellow to orange, to medium brown to get the depth into my image. Going over it a few times really embeds the color into the paper allowing it to blend more..
Creating the My Monthly Hero Adventure Awaits Card:
Start with a piece of white cardstock 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 and stencil #1. This gives you the base that you build up on. I did the entire thing in yellow, then brought in brown at the edges
Next, go over it a second time blending in a bit of orange as well.
Then, switch to stencil #2 which adds the highlights. Blend this in the oranges and browns to add depth to the image.
Finally, use stencil #3 to add the cactus silhouettes.
Putting the card together:
Die cut the mountain image using the die set included in the kit.
Next, create a mask the same size as the sun in Stencil #3 and attach it above the mountains on a new piece of 4-1/4 x 5-1/4 white card stock.
Then, blend yellow across the sky.
Finally, using the #2 stencil, add the wispy clouds in a light orange.
Remove the mask and trim both pieces to 4 x 5-1/4.
TIP – As my black ink blending wasn’t very dark, I went back over it with a black marker.
Finally, pick a sentiment from the stamp set included in this month’s kit and white heat emboss it at the bottom of the card.
Mat it to a black mat and then attach to a top folding A2 white card base.
That’s it. Fun and very versatile Kit this month and you can create some great masculine cards with it too, great for your guy’s birthday.
