NEW VIDEO - Creative Ways to Use Nesting Dies #1 | Easy Geometric Backgrounds - Sandi MacIver

Welcome back! Today’s cardmaking video kicks off a brand-new series: Creative Ways to Use Nesting Dies – and we’re starting with Easy Geometric Backgrounds.

By repeatedly die-cutting the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Circles and arranging them in a simple pattern over a tightly embossed background, I created a clean geometric wallpaper effect filled with dimension and texture. A simple floral arrangement finishes the card while still allowing the beautiful background to take center stage.

Near the end of the video, I also share an additional card created with the Simon Says Stamp Chunky Ovals Nesting Dies. I used the same technique but it creates a completely different look, showing just how versatile your nesting dies can be.

How to create the Creative Ways to Use Nesting Dies Card:

Cardstock Cuts:

White Hammermill Cardstock:

4-1/4″ x 11″ score and fold at 5-1/2″ – for the card base
4″ x 5-1/4″ – Embossed panel for the card front
4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ (3)

– 2 pieces for die-cutting the stitched circles
-1 piece for stamping and coloring the vase of flowers, and stamping and trimming the sentiment

About the Embossing Background:

Choose an embossing folder with a small tight repeating design. This allows your eye to move smoothly across the background, seeing it more as texture than as a competing design.

A small repeating pattern also gives you a handy guide for lining up the stitched circle die-cuts, making it much easier to keep your rows straight and evenly spaced. (I explain this in the video).

A few embossing folders that would work beautifully for this technique are Wooden Plants, Basket Weave, Spun Glass and the one I used for today’s card – Woven Rings — my personal favorite.

Choosing a Stamp for the Art Piece:

Choose a simple stamped image or die-cut that takes up only about one-quarter of the card front. This allows the beautiful geometric wallpaper you created to remain the star of the show.

Avoide anything to large or detailed, as it can compete with the background and make the finished card feel overly busy. A smaller, simple focal image adds just enough interest while letting all that fabulous texture and pattern shine through.
