Layered Texture Background with Bold African Daisies

Hi cardmaking friends!
I had an order from Altenew arrive the other day, and I couldn’t wait to dive in and start creating.  Today’s card features the Lush Botanicals African Daisy 3D Folder and Die Set–and this set absolutely rocks!  You die cut the three flower layers (at the same time), ink blend them, and then emboss all the pieces at the same time using the long, slim embossing folder.  It’s such a clever design.  It uses their keyhole system for easy assembly and comes at a great price point, and creates the prettiest dimensional daisies.

Gerbera Daisies are my favorite flowers, so of course I had to make mine purple today, LOL.

For the background, I may have gotten a little carried away layering textures…but honestly, I was having way too much fun to stop, haha.  I combined two embossed panels, then distressed, tore, and rolled back some of the edges to create a soft mixed-media look full of texture and dimension.

Follow along below as I share how I created this layered textured card design.

The mixed-media card design includes distressed embossed layers, bright green leaves, sparkling gems, and a black fountain pen styled on a white embossed floral backdrop.

Products used for the Layered Texture Background with Bold African Daisies Card:

How to create the Layered Texture African Daisies Card:

Create the Card Base:

Trim two panels of Seaside cardstock to 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″.  Emboss one panel with the Organic Linen Embossing Folder and the other with the Handmade Happiness Embossing Folder.

Use a Distress Tool to rough up the edges of the Handmade Happiness panel, then tear away the top and bottom left corners, along with a half circle from the center right edge for added texture and dimension.

Layer the two embossed panels together and attach them to the front of a white, top-folding, A2-sized card base.

Create the Flowers and Leaves:

Use the African Daisy folder and Die set to die cut three flowers from Lavender cardstock.  Ink blend the outer tips of the petals using Altenew Hydrangea and Ultra Violet Fresh Dye Inks.

Place the die cuts inside the embossing folder and emboss the detail into the petals before layering the flower pieces together.

Die cut the flower centers from black cardstock and attach them to each flower.

PRO-TIP – Once the flowers are assembled, I used a VersaMark Pen to add little squiggles to the centers, then heat embossed them with gold embossing powder for extra detail and shine.

Use the Leaf Essentials Die Set to cut three leaves from Rainforest cardstock.

Create the Sentiment:

Use the Versatile Greetings Die Set to die cut the “Hello” sentiment from Lavender cardstock and the shadow from black.  Ink blend the bottom section of the sentiment before gluing the layers together.

Assemble the Card:

Use white liquid glue to attach the leaves to the card front, then use foam squares to pop up the flowers and the sentiment for added dimension.

PRO-TIP:  Before attaching the flowers, I gently rolled the petals around a pen barrel to give them a soft curl and more realistic dimension.

Where my color-combo Came From for This Card:

As I shared previously, I spent last weekend at the garden center and planting all our summer pots and baskets.  I picked up some gorgeous purple African Daisies for the centers of my turquoise planters, and the color combination was so pretty.  I just had to recreate it for today’s card design.
